The Basic Idea

The movie gamer is set in a future- world where humans can control other humans in a massive scale, real world gaming environment, but Tillman which is the star player of a very inhumane game called SLAYERS that involves deaths of prisoners, in which he is one himself, seeks to try and find the person who created such a horrible environment so that he can be free and rescue his family.

BAD

It took me a while to figure out where this movie was headed when it first started, I didn’t like how it started because I felt like I was being introduced to it in such a manner that nothing was making since, there was a lot of parts in the movie that were hard to watch because there was a lot of sexual things going on that sometimes you tell yourself it is way to much, also there was a lot of murders and that makes you think wow with all the technology in this movie they are still killing each other without even thinking about it. technology plays a big role in this movie, the bad thing about to much is that as we see in this movie technology can control our lives, or even worse give our cells to a more superior person which in this case was KEN CASTLE and let him control everything we do in our lifetime. The part that really disturbed me in a bad way was when they showed the guy who was playing Tillman’s wife in society, it was really hard to watch that part because that shows that people forget about going outside and doing exercise but the game is so addicting that he sits in that chair all day literally becomes the game and doesn’t move from there. This movie was also made to follow a very weird script, the narrative in the movie was really hard to find because they barely had any. it was really hard to follow the story line cause it was constantly changing but at the same time you knew how the movie was going to end, because it was built with a bad guy and good guy and the good guy always prevails at the end

GOOD

This film compares to Donna Haraway’s essay “A manifesto for cyborgs” because I feel a strong connection between the movie and the essay. She mentions that “a cyborg is a creature in a post-gender world”, we saw an example of this when in the movie they showed how the game SOCIETY was and how there was no boundaries on what you can make your human do, there was girls making out with each other and showing their boobs out in public and that happens because it what we would love to see but wont happen in public and technology can put you in the position to do it without getting in trouble. she states that we are all cyborgs in ways that we don’t notice but we act according to what we see around us and our culture. we are born into a certain group and we act and do things that they do because its the way we are taught, the movie shows a lot of that in the sense technology is the highest power and the way you survive is if you join with it. the technology that was introduced to us in this movie is way more advanced than I would have imagined. I do believe that this can really easily happen because we see it in the world we live in today, cellphones control us in ways we don’t think it does but we cant be more than two seconds without it. also the mind is the most powerful thing we have and if we keep on with technology the way we are it can easily take control of us. this movie is a perfect example on how we can easily get lost in a world filled with technology and forget about the important things in life. this can also be compared to Kermode’s essay “the end” because he mentions on how technology can take over and that can be apocalyptic in the end.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS FILM AND I ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO TAKE A LOOK AND IMAGINE IF OUR WORLD WAS LIKE THIS AND HOW WE CAN STOP IT FROM BECOMING LIKE THIS IN THE NEAR FUTURE WHEN TECHNOLOGY RISES TO A POINT THAT WE CANT CONTROL ANYMORE.

  1. This post brings to mind questions of how social roles are influenced by technology. I like how you bring up Haraway’s point about a “post gender world” because we can clearly see in the film that this isn’t how we’ve chosen to represent ourselves. This movie is an extreme version of how we already hyper-sexualize our society with the added element of an inherent disconnect through technology.

This reads more like a review of the film than an analysis of its form, which is okay for now but I’ll give you a few tips. You’ve adequately drawn on Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto” and bring out a really interesting quote. Then you apply this quote to a scene of the movie, in this case “Society,” and if I’m reading you correctly, you interpret this as being part of the “post-gender” world Haraway writes of. That’s where your starting point should be–if you do think “Gamer” represents a post-gender world, tell us how and why it is, and why that’s important. If you disagree, then also tell us how and why is isn’t. And always why it’s important.
