Blizzard puts up massive World of Warcraft display in Times Square

I saw the above picture as the top post on Reddit this morning. It’s an enormous axe destroying a New York City cab in the middle of Times Square. The purpose of the display is to hype Thursday’s launch of the Warlords of Draenor expansion to World of Warcraft. It’s definitely a cool display in one of the most frequented spots in the world.

Every since beginning playing the game for class, I’ve noticed World of Warcraft references all over, including commercials during the Sunday Night Football game this past weekend, and even a ton of sponsored posts on my Facebook news feed. This shows just how massive the game is, and how much money the game makes through subscriptions alone, even ten years past its initial launch.

The new version of the game has a lot of neat features, including raising the level cap to 100, introducing new zones in Azeroth, and new character modes. It’s all part of the game’s ten year anniversary that falls this month.

I’ve always kind of wondered where all the money the game makes from subscriptions goes. I assume it’s mostly to design and server upkeep, but they still bring in a ton of money. I have to wonder if big advertising displays like this ever attract enough new players to pay for themselves.
